Bug in Apple’s Calculator Causes Misaligned Digits

While programming on my Mac and converting decimal numbers to hex and binary using Apple’s Calculator, I noticed some wobbly lines of numbers. Initially, I thought my eyes were getting tired, but the issue persisted, distracting me from my task. I decided to investigate further and took a screenshot to confirm my suspicions. Indeed, some digits in the binary display section were off by one pixel. Despite the nice anti-aliased rendering, the misalignment was bothersome.
I speculated that the calculator app, which had been open for many days, might be experiencing a rounding error due to the UI coordinate system using floats. This error could have aggregated over time, causing the digits to shift. Although I was curious to find out the root cause, I realized that my vision wasn't the problem. Unfortunately, there was no feedback option within the app to report this bug to Apple.
Instead, I decided to share the bug on the Internet. A search for "feedback" in Spotlight revealed the "Feedback Assistant," where users can report issues to Apple. This feature was new to me, and I was grateful for the discovery. I also considered the possibility that the misalignment might be an intentional design choice, as many oddities in macOS over the past decade have been explained away as such.
After taking screenshots and restarting the calculator, the misplacements disappeared. I will keep an eye out for the issue to reoccur and report it through the Apple website if it does. The Feedback Assistant is a useful tool for reporting bugs, and I encourage others to use it.
