Real-Time Settlers Of Catan
25 years on, Settlers of Catan remains a beloved board game, but it can be frustrating when players take too long for their turns. To address this, my family adapted Settlers of Catan with simultaneous time-limited turns, using a few rule tweaks and a free app developed by one of my children. The new format has been met with positive feedback from experienced players, making the game quicker and more exciting. We can now complete a six-player Cities and Knights game in about 45 minutes filled with intense fun.
How to Play
If you'll be playing Cities and Knights, here's a straightforward guide:
Setup Phase: Nothing changes.
Ongoing Gameplay: Everyone takes their turn simultaneously. Players can trade, build, use progress cards, and activate and use knights at any time. Each turn begins every 30 seconds with the app rolling the dice.
Stopping the Clock: When rules require a response, such as attacks or robber moves, the clock halts until the action is resolved. The app monitors for barbarian ship tracking and stops during these events.
Special Cards: When Alchemist is played, the app halts the dice roll for the next turn, allowing the player to declare the dice values.
Quick Rounds: In the early game, if no one wants to do anything, pressing the Next Roll button skips to the next dice roll.
Winning Conditions: The game ends immediately when a player declares victory, distinguishing it from traditional rules where others have time to respond.

Intensified Engagement: The game's tempo starts relaxed but intensifies, enhancing the overall experience.
FAQs
How Do You Resolve Simultaneous Conflicts?
Placements: Typically, it’s clear who placed their road or settlement first. If not, a coin toss can be a friendly resolution.
Progress Cards: Players usually reach consensus, but preannouncements help order actions.
For large games, you’ll find it easier to split the resources and commodity piles into two, one at each end of the table, and for one person to deal out the progress cards when they’re generated.Wheat and knights are more valuable in this game because with enough resources you can use all your knights and then reactivate them every turn. Initially it’s easy to take all your actions within 30 seconds, but as the game progresses you get more cards every turn and the time constraint becomes more of an issue. Late game you may struggle to do everything you want to do in the time allowed. Compared to the regular game, it’s more difficult to track the progress of other players and target the leader. The game starts relaxed but the intensity builds and builds.
