Today in Edworking News we want to talk about Perplexica, an AI-powered search engine. It is an open source alternative to Perplexity AI

🚀 Perplexica - An AI-powered search engine

Overview

Perplexica is a highly advanced, open-source AI-powered search engine that stands out as an exceptional alternative to Perplexity AI. Unlike traditional search engines, Perplexica delves deep into the internet, leveraging machine learning algorithms like similarity searching and embeddings to fetch refined and accurate results, complete with cited sources. Its backbone is SearxNG, a continuously updated and fully open-source platform, guaranteeing that users always get the latest information without any privacy concerns.

Preview Features

Perplexica comes packed with a variety of features, including:

  • Image and video search.

  • Planned features for further enhancements.

Installation

There are primarily two ways to install Perplexica—with Docker and without Docker. However, using Docker is highly recommended for a simplified setup process.

Getting Started with Docker (Recommended)

  1. Ensure Docker is installed and running on your system.

  2. Clone the Perplexica repository.

  3. Navigate to the project directory.

  4. Rename the `sample.config.toml` file to `config.toml`.

  5. Fill in the necessary fields in the `config.toml` file:
    - OPENAI: Your OpenAI API key (if using OpenAI's models).
    - OLLAMA: Your Ollama API URL (e.g., `https://host.docker.internal:PORT_NUMBER` for Docker setups).
    - GROQ: Your Groq API key (if using Groq's hosted models).

  6. Run the `docker-compose.yaml` file:
    ```bash
    docker-compose up --build
  7. Wait a few minutes for the setup to complete and access Perplexica at `https://localhost:3000` in your web browser.
Non-Docker Installation
Even though Docker is recommended, Perplexica can also be set up without Docker. For more intricate details on non-Docker installation, consult the installation documentation.
Using as a Search Engine
Perplexica can serve as a versatile alternative to traditional search engines like Google or Bing. You can even add a shortcut for quick access from your browser's search bar by following a few simple steps.
